Paul Janet

a.k.a. Paul Alexander Rene Janet

Author Code: FPAJ

Born: Apr. 30, 1823 - Paris, France

Died: Oct. 4, 1899 - Paris, France

Educated in Paris, Janet became professor of moral philosophy at the University of Bourges in 1845. In 1848, he moved to a similar position at Strasbourg. His first publication, Essay on the Dialectic in Plato and Hegel appeared in 1855. In 1857, he became professor of logic at the Lycee Louis-le-Grand in Paris. In 1864, he became the chair of philosophy at the Sorbonne. He was elected a member of the Academie des Sciences Morales et Politiques that same year. As a philosopher, Janet contributed little in the way of original thought. However, his main work, Elements of Morals (1884) derives much of its content from the practical philosophy of Kant. His other works include The Family: A Moral Philosophy (1855), The Philosophical Crisis (1865), Freedom of Thinking (1866), Morality (1874), Final Causes (1877), Masters of Modern Thought (1883) and Elements of Scientific Philosophy and Moral Philosophy (1890).
