Cecil Beaton

Educated at Heath Mount School, St. Cyprian's School, Harrow School and St. John's College, Cambridge, Beaton became a gifted photographer. He proved hopeless at office work and decided to work as a freelance photographer. He had his first exhibition at the Cooling Gallery in London and it was quite a success. He worked as a staff photographer for Vanity Fair and Vogue and in 1930 published his first collection, The Book of Beauty. He was in great demand, even to the point of being picked to photograph the Duke of Windsor's wedding in 1937.During the Second World War, Beaton photographed the fighting in England, the Middle East and North Africa for the British Ministry of Information. Following the war, he continued his portrait work which at the same time extending his work in costume and set design. He would go on to win Oscars for Gigi (1958) and My Fair Lady (1964), and Tony Awards for his costume work on stage sets for My Fair Lady (1957) and Coco (1970). Beaton also produced some fine short stories. Following a stroke in 1974 that left him partially paralysed, Beaton arranged for Sothebys to sell his life's work. During his long career, Beaton photographed a 'Who's Who' of the rich and famous. His writings and publications include My Royal Past (1939), Portrait of New York (1948), Persona Grata (1953), Japanese (1959), My Bolivian Aunt: A Memoir (1971) and four volumes of diaries (1961-1978).
