Graham Greene

a.k.a. Henry Graham Greene

Author Code: EHGG

Born: Oct. 2, 1904 - Berkhamstead, England

Died: Apr. 3, 1991 - Vevey, Switzerland

Educated at Balliol College, Oxford, Greene graduated in 1925 with a degree in history. He worked for a time as a private tutor before turning to journalism. He was on the staff of the Nottingham Journal and became a sub-editor of The Times. In 1929, he published his first novel, The Man Within, which proved popular and convinced Greene to write full-time. He produced some unsuccessful works before reaching great success with Stamboul Train in 1932. The book was made into the 1937 film, Orient Express. Greene continued to work as a freelance journalist and as a reviewer for magazines such as The Spectator. In 1937, his review of the Shirley Temple film Wee Willie Winkie resulted in a lawsuit and Greene's departure for Mexico until the trial was over. He became a world traveller which gave him the experiences so useful in his novels - and these usually became best-sellers, films and financial successes. In addition to his many novels, Greene also produced some plays and short stories. His main works include Brighton Rock (1938), The Power and the Glory (1940), The Third Man (1949), The End of the Affair (1951), Twenty-One Stories (1954), The Quiet American (1955), Our Man in Havana (1958), The Comedians (1966), Travels With My Aunt (1969), The Human Factor (1978) and The Last Word (1990).
