Elizabeth Goudge

Educated at the Grassendale School in Southbourne and University College, Reading, Goudge studied art and then taught art and design in Oxford. Her first book, The Fairies' Baby and Other Stories, in 1919 was a dismal failure and Goudge continued her teaching career whilst looking after her parents. In 1934, she published Island Magic, set in Guernsey and which became an instant success. Her literary career took off and she would go on to produce numerous novels, short stories, children's books as well as religiously-oriented non-fiction. Green Dolphin Country (1944) became a best-seller and a film (Green Dolphin Street) in 1947. She was awarded the Carnegie Medal in 1946 for her children's book The Little White House. In 1960, she co-founded the Romantic Novelists Association. Her other works include A City of Bells (1936), Sister of the Angels (1939), The Golden Skylark and Other Stories (1941), Henrietta's House (1942), Gentian Hill (1949), White Wings (1952), The Rosemary Tree (1956), The Dean's Watch (1960), The Scent of Water (1963), I Saw Three Ships (1969), The Lost Angel (1971) and her autobiography The Joy of Snow (1974).
