Educated at Cranleigh School in Surrey, Aumonier initially turned his hand to art, following in the family tradition, and exhibited his work at the Royal Academy in 1902 and 1903. He married the concert pianist Gertrude Peppercorn in 1907. In 1908, he began writing for the stage and also performing his own sketches and was very successful. In all, he produced around 90 short stories, six novels and some essays. His work includes Olga Bardel (1916), The Friends and Other Stories (1917), Just Outside (1917), The Querrils (1919), One After Another (1920), The Golden Windmill and Other Stories (1921), Miss Bracegirdle Does Her Duty (1922) and Heartbeat (1922).
