Jack Vance

a.k.a. John Holbrook Vance

Author Code: AJHV

Born: Aug. 28, 1916 - San Francisco, California, USA

Died: May 26, 2013 - Oakland, California, USA

Educated at the University of California, Berkeley, Vance graduated in 1942. As a class project, Vance wrote his first science fiction story, but was not given any encouragement by his professor. His eyesight was very poor and this precluded his military service during the war, however he did enter the merchant marines in 1943. Following the war he married and settled in Oakland. He worked at a variety of jobs including as a screenwriter for the Captain Video TV series. He also contributed short stories to many of the pulp magazines, such as Startling Stories and Astounding Science Fiction. In 1950, he published The Dying Earth, a work that made his name and influenced many SF writers. He was extremely prolific up to the 1980s, when his output began to decline. In addition to science fiction and fantasy, Vance also produced some mystery novels. He was a close friend of fellow SF authors Poul Anderson and Frank Herbert. His other works include The World Thinker (1945), Big Planet (1952), To Live Forever (1956), The Dragon Masters (1963), The Blue World (1966), The Pleasant Grove Murders (1967), The Gray Prince (1974), Lost Moons (1982), Light From a Lone Star (1985), When the Five Moons Rise (1992) and Throy (1992).
