Frank L. Packard

a.k.a. Frank Lucius Packard

Author Code: OFLP

Born: Feb. 2, 1877 - Montreal, Canada

Died: Feb. 17, 1942 - Lachine, Canada

Educated at McGill University and the University of Liege, Packard initially studied engineering and, following graduation, worked as a civil engineer in both Canada and the USA. He published his first short story in Munsey's Magazine in 1906 and he became a regular contributor, with a collection of his stories appearing in 1911. Packard settled in Lachine, Quebec in 1910. He published his first novel, Greater Love Hath No Man, in 1913. His second novel, The Miracle Man (1914) was a huge success and was adapted for the stage by George M. Cohan, later also produced as a silent film. In 1917, he reached the best-seller list with The Adventures of Jimmie Dale, the first of many crime novels. His experience of working for the Canadian-Pacific railroad resulted in a number of railroad-based mysteries involving his character Jimmie Dale. He had also travelled to the South Pacific in 1912 and used this as a setting for some of his works. His output included The Beloved Traitor (1915), The Sin That Was His (1917), From Now On (1919), The Further Adventures of Jimmie Dale (1919), Pawned (1921), The Four Stragglers (1923), Two Stolen Idols (1927), Jimmie Dale and the Blue Envelope Murder (1930), The Gold Skull Murders (1931), and More Knaves Than One (1938).
