Georges Courteline *

a.k.a. Georges Victor Marcel Moinaux

Author Code: FGCL

Born: Jun. 25, 1858 - Tours, France

Died: Jun. 25, 1929 - Paris, France

Educated in Meaux, Moinaux failed to obtain a degree and spent some years in a variety of jobs before settling for a civil service position. He paid half of his salary to a colleague for working in his place and never went to the office. This arrangement worked fine until the colleague asked for a holiday; Moinaux resigned and took up writing using the pseudonym of Courteline. In 1890, he began a long collaboration with the newspaper L'Echo de Paris. He was a prolific writer and probably the greatest humorous writer in modern French literature. He produced tales, comedies, sketches, as well as novels. He was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1899. He seems to have stopped writing around 1912. His many works include Les Gaites de L'escadron (1886), Lidoire et la biscotte (1892), Boubouroche (1893), Messieurs les ronds-de-cure (1893), Un Client servieux (1897), La Paix chez soi (1903) and Les Linottes (1912).
