John Taine *

a.k.a. Eric Temple Bell

Author Code: AETB

Born: Feb. 7, 1883 - Peterhead, Scotland

Died: Dec. 21, 1960 - Watsonville, California, USA

Although born in Scotland, Bell spent most of his life in America, apart from a few years in Bedford, England. He showed an aptitude for mathematics from an early age and continued to study at Stanford University, the University of Washington and Columbia University. He later taught at the University of Washington and subsequently at the California Institute of Technology. He wrote some poetry in the early 1920s and, in 1924, published The Purple Sapphire, his first novel. Bell adopted the pseudonym of John Taine for all of his fictional work while continuing to write non-fiction under his own name. In the field of mathematics, Bell polynomials and Bell numbers of combinatorics are named in his honour and in 1924 he was awarded the Bocher Memorial Prize for his work in mathematical analysis. He began writing for pulp SF magazines during the early 1930s and wrote several SF novels including perhaps his best work, The Time Stream, in 1931. His other works include The Gold Tooth (1927), The Crystal Horde (1930), Seeds of Life (1931), The Queen of the Sciences (1931), Numerology (1933), Before the Dawn (1934), Men of Mathematics (1937), Tomorrow (1939), The Magic of Numbers (1946), The Forbidden Garden (1947), G. O. G. 666 (1954) and The Last Problem (1961 Posthumous).
