Adam Szymanski

Author Code: OASZ

Born: Jul. 15, 1852 - Hrieszniew, Poland

Died: Apr. 6, 1916 - Moscow, Russia

Educated in law at the University of Warsaw, Szymanski became involved in the 'National Government' movement and helped to found the Sons of the Fatherland, both resulting in his arrest and imprisonment. He spent two years in the Warsaw Citadel prison and was released in 1879. On his release, he was exiled to Siberia. He lived in Yakutsk from 1879 to 1881 and in Kirensk and Bolagansk from 1882 to 1885. During this time he wrote Szkice (Sketches - 1887) which pictured the hardships and suffering of Polish exiles in Siberia. Finally, he was able to leave Siberia after 1885 and moved to European Russia. He was finally able to return to his beloved Poland in 1895, where he spent the next six years in Warsaw. He then moved to Krakow in 1902. From 1904 to 1913 he was the editor of School Reform. He was a member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society from 1885. His other works include Srul - From Lubartow (1885), With Settlers and Deportees (1894), Maciej the Mazur (1904), Among the Slovenes (1907), Aksinya (1911) and Leo Tolstoy (1911).
