Lydia Sigourney

a.k.a. Lydia (nee) Howard Huntley

Author Code: ALHS

Born: Sep. 1, 1791 - Norwich, Connecticut, USA

Died: Jun. 10, 1865 - Hartford, Connecticut, USA

After her formal education and some private tutoring, Sigourney worked as a school teacher. She published her first work, Moral Pieces in Prose and Verse, in 1815. In 1819, she married Charles Sigourney, a wealthy merchant and, following the marriage, tended to publish anonymously at her husband's request. She only began to write as a full-time career in 1833 when her parents were in financial straits and her husband's wealth had declined. She published dozens of volumes of verse and essays which were quite popular at the time. She also worked as an editor for Godey's Lady's Book. In 1824, she published Sketches of Connecticut in honour of her earlier benefactor, Mrs. Lathrop. She became known as the Sweet Singer of Hartford. Her many works include Poems (1827), Sketches (1834), Olive Buds (1836), Letters to Mothers (1838), Pocahontas and Other Poems (1841), Pleasant Memories of Pleasant Lands (1842), Letters to My Pupils (1851), Past Meridian (1854), The Man of Uz, and Other Poems (1862) and her autobiography Letters of Life (1866 Posthumous).
