Lincoln Colcord

a.k.a. Lincoln Ross Colcord

Author Code: ALRC

Born: Aug. 14, 1883 - At Sea

Died: Nov. 16, 1947 - Searsport, Maine, USA

Born aboard a ship that his father captained, the Charlotte A. Littlefield, Colcord spent most of his first fourteen years at sea and developed a love for it. His experiences of these early years would greatly influence his literary output in future years. He received his education from Searsport High School and the University of Maine where he majored in civil engineering. His first short story appeared in 1908 and for the next decade he produced numerous short stories, poems and essays. He began contributing stories, mostly of the sea, to leading periodicals such as McClure's and Bookman and by the 1920s had a deserved reputation in literature of the sea. He became friends with historian Ole Rolvaag and helped him in the translation and presentation of his best-selling Giants in the Earth in 1927. In his later years, Colcord founded the American Neptune and served as both an editor and contributor. After years of living in various places, he returned to Searsport, Maine in 1930 and spent the remainder of his life there. His works include Saving Face (1909), The Drifting Diamond (1912), The Game of Life and Death (1914), Vision of War (1915), An Instrument of the Gods (1921) and Roll and Go: Songs of American Sailormen (1924)[with his sister Joanna].
