R. E. Vernede

Died: Apr. 9, 1917 - Havrincourt, France

Educated at St. John's College, Oxford, Vernede became a writer soon after graduating in 1898. He produced a number of works before the outbreak of the First World War, and received some critical acclaim. In addition to writing articles and short stories, Vernede produced a number of novels. His travels before the war took him to India and Canada. In 1914, at the age of thirty-nine,Vernede enlisted in the British Army, commissioned as a lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion Rifle Brigade. He was wounded at the battle of the Somme in 1916, but returned to the fighting later that year. He was killed by machine-gun fire, leading an attack on Havrincourt. His War Poems and Other Verses was published posthumously in 1917. Later that year, his wife published Letters to His Wife, which included his letters from 1915 to 1917. His other works include The Pursuit of Mr. Faviel (1905), Meriel of the Moors (1906), The Judgment of Illingborough (1908), The June Lady (1911), The Quietness of Dick (1911), An Ignorant in India (1911) and The Fair Dominion (1911).
