David A. Wasson

a.k.a. David Atwood Wasson

Author Code: ADAW

Born: May 14, 1823 - West Brooksfield, Maine, USA

Died: Jan. 21, 1887 - West Medford, Massachusetts, USA

Educated at Bowdoin College and the Theological Seminary at Bangor, Maine, Wasson became an assistant pastor of the Congregational Church at Groveland, Massachusetts. A year later he moved to Worcester, Massachusetts. He read Carlyle's Sartor Resartus and was greatly influenced by the work. He preached a controversial sermon which resulted in his dismissal, but at the same time, convinced enough of his parishioners that an independent church could be called for. Wasson soon became known and was introduced to Emerson and others. He began to write essays and poems for magazines such as The Atlantic Monthly. He also began to suffer ill health and travelled abroad for rest and relaxation. In 1865, he became a minister of the independent church, the 28th Congregational Society of Boston. In 1867, he co-founded the Free Religious Association. Although Wasson is often referred to as an Emerson disciple, the truth is that, in spite of respecting Emerson, Wasson still held diverging views. His works include Religion Divorced From Theology (1852), Sacrificial Religion and Spiritual Religion (1853), The Universe No Failure (1856), Christianity and Universal Religion (1865), Poems (1888 Posthumous) and Essays: Religious, Social, Political (1889 Posthumous).
