Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Author Code: AKVJ

Born: Nov. 11, 1922 - Indianapolis, Indiana, USA

Died: Apr. 11, 2007 - New York City, New York, USA

Educated at Cornell University where he majored in chemistry, Vonnegut enlisted in the US Army during the war and was allowed to continue is studies, first at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and later at the University of Tennessee. He was assigned to a combat unit in 1944 and was captured during the Battle of the Bulge. He spent six months in captivity before being liberated by the Red Army. He spent his captivity in Dresden and was there during the carpet bombing and subsequent firestorm; surviving in an underground slaughterhouse which the Germans had dubbed 'Slaughterhouse Five', and which became the inspiration for his subsequent novel of that name in 1969. Vonnegut's first novel, Player Piano, appeared in 1952. He began his writing career with short stories, submitted to periodicals such as Collier's and Galaxy Science Fiction. While many of his works were in the SF genre, he also produced many essays, journalism and thrillers in addition to some major graphic art. During his life he was a staunch supporter of civil liberties and rights, an anti-war protester during Viet Nam and an anti-establishment writer during the Bush administration. His other works include The Science of Titan (1959), Canary in a Cathouse (1961), Cat's Cradle (1963), Welcome to the Monkey House (1968), Breakfast of Champions (1973), Jailbird (1979), Deadeye Dick (1982), Galapagos (1985), Hocus Pocus (1990), Bagomo Snuff Box (1999) and Look at the Birdie (2009 Posthumous).
