Rachel Crothers

Author Code: ARCR

Born: Dec. 12, 1878 - Bloomington, Illinois, USA

Died: Jul. 5, 1958 - Danbury, Connecticut, USA

Educated at the Illinois State University High School and the New England School of Dramatic Instruction in Boston, Crothers' interest in acting led her to join the Bloomington Dramatic Club. In 1897, she moved to New York and began a minor acting career. She began to write her own plays and had a number of successes during the first part of the century. In 1906, her play The Three of Us was a resounding success and established Crothers as a major playwright. Throughout the next thirty years, Crothers had numerous hits and she became one of America's most popular playwrights. By the end of the 1930s, she had ceased to produce plays. Her major works include Myself Bettina (1908), A Man's World (1910), Ourselves (1913), Once Upon a Time (1917), Nice People (1921), Mary the Third (1923), Let Us Be Gay (1929), When Ladies Meet (1933) and Susan and God (1937).
