Menander

Author Code: CMEN

Born: 342 BC - Athens, Greece

Died: 291 BC - Piraeus, Athens, Greece

A pupil of the philosopher Theophrastus and a military companion of Epicurus, Menander was the greatest writer of Attic New Comedy. He is said to have produced some one hundred plays, but most have been lost during the seventh and eighth centuries AD. During the 20th century, there were numerous finds of papyri which resulted in one complete play, Disolos, 'the bad-tempered man', and some sizeable fragments of others. Most of his plays were written in verse. Menander was a great influence on comedy and the later playwrights such as Moliere and Sheridan. The other plays that have survived in part include Aspis, Georgos, Dis exapaton, Epitrepontes, Colax, Misumenos, Perikeiromene, Samia, Sicyonios, Heros, Theophoroumene, Kitharistes and Phasma.
