Arthur Davison Ficke

a.k.a. Anne Knish *

Author Code: AADF

Born: Nov. 10, 1883 - Davenport, Iowa, USA

Died: Nov. 30, 1945 - Hudson, New York, USA

Educated in law at Harvard University, Ficke became good friends with classmates Witter Bynner and Wallace Stevens. Following graduation, Ficke spent four years traveling before returning to America and being admitted to the bar. He then spent the next eight years working in his father's law practice. He also managed, during this time, to publish eight volumes of poetry and two treatises on Japanese art. He was also one of the conspirators, with Bynner, of the Spectra hoax in 1914. Ficke avoided the modernist trend in poetry, preferring traditional conservatism. He married Evelyn Blunt in 1907, but divorced her in 1923 in order to marry the artist, Gladys Brown. He served in the army during the First World War, rising to the rank of captain, and during this time he met Edna St. Vincent Millay and the two had a short-lived affair. Most of the critics during his life were in favour of his work and, after a long period of neglect, his work is experiencing a comeback. Over the years, Ficke developed into one of the world's foremost experts on Japanese art. Suffering from tuberculosis and cancer, Ficke took his own life at the age of 62.His works include From the Isles (1907), The Happy Princess and Other Poems (1907), The Earth Passion,Boundary and Other Poems (1908), Some Recent Poems of Note (1910), Twelve Japanese Painters (1913), Mr. Faust (1913), Chats on Japanese Prints (1915), Sonnets of a Portrait Painter (1922), Out of Silence and Other Poems (1924), Christ in China (1927), The Road to the Mountain (1930), The Secret and Other Poems (1936) and Tumultuous Shore and Other Poems (1942).
