Carolyn Wells

Author Code: ACLW

Born: Jun. 18, 1862 - Rahway, New Jersey, USA

Died: Mar. 26, 1942 - New York City, New York, USA

Educated in New Jersey, she worked for a number of years as a librarian for the Rahway Library Association. An avid reader, Wells supplemented her formal education by emersing herself in world literature. She was also a lover of puzzles and this led to her first book, At the Sign of the Sphinx, in 1896. Much of her early work was children's literature and nonsense verse, but she later turned her hand to mystery and detective stories with great success. She dedicated herself to writing full-time after 1900 and would go on to produce some 170 books. Wells also contributed verse and humour to newspapers and today is probably best-remembered for her nonsense verse and humorous limericks. Her works include Patty Fairfield (1901), The Dorrance Domain (1905), The Clue (1909), The Re-echo Club (1913), The Mark of Cain (1917), Anything But the Truth (1925), The Doorstep Murders (1930), The Master Murderer (1933), The Rest of My Life (1937) and Ballade of Baker Street (1939).
