Jose Echegaray

a.k.a. Jose Eschegaray y Eizaguirre

Author Code: SJEE

Born: Apr. 19, 1832 - Madrid, Spain

Died: Sep. 14, 1916 - Madrid, Spain

Educated in Madrid in mathematics and engineering, Echegaray gained practical engineering experience in Almeria and Granada, before returning to the Escuela de Caminos in Madrid and becoming professor of pure and applied mathematics. He joined the Society of Political Economy and was active in the Revolution of 1867 that overthrew the monarchy. He was appointed minister of education and finance in the new government. When the monarchy was restored in 1874, Echegaray withdrew from politics and went into exile. In that year, he produced El Libro Talonario, a comedy that was very successful and was instrumental in convincing him to continue as a writer and playwright. He became a prolific playwright, producing over 60 plays, many of which were huge successes. Many of his plays have been translated and, unlike most Spanish playwrights, have been equally successful abroad. His works include The Great Galeoto (1881), Dos Fanatismos (1887), El Hijo de Don Juan (1892), Mancha que Limpia (1895), La Duda (1898), El Loco Dios (1900), Cuentos (1912) and his autobiography Recuerdos (1917 Posthumous).
