Sacheverell Sitwell

a.k.a. Sir Sacheverell Reresby Sitwell, 6th Baronet

Died: Oct. 1, 1988 - Towcester, Northamptonshire, England

The brother of Osbert and Edith Sitwell, Sacheverell was educated at Eton College and Balliol College, Oxford. After serving in the Grenadier Guards as an officer from 1916 to 1918, he returned to Balliol, but did not receive a degree. The year, he published The People's Palace, a collection of poems which had some moderate success, although his criticism and essays which much more successful during his career. He became an accomplished and respected art critic and travel writer over the years. He also showed poor judgement at times, once becoming a member of Oswald Moseley's neo-Nazi New Party in 1931.Luckily, he realized his error in time. For many years, he refused to publish his poems because of poor reviews, but he eventually recanted. His many works include The Hundred and One Harlequins (1922), Southern Baroque Art (1924), German Baroque Art (1927), The Cyder Feast (1927), Mozart (1932), Liszt (1934), Dance of the Quick and the Dead (1936), Roumanian Journey (1938), Poltergeists (1940), The Hunters and the Hunted (1948), Spain (1950), Denmark (1956), Journey to the Ends of Time (1959), Monks, Nuns and Monasteries (1965), Agamemnon's Tomb (1972), All Summer in a Day (1976) and An Indian Summer (1982).
