Franz Grillparzer

a.k.a. Franz Seraphicus Grillparzer

Author Code: GFSG

Born: Jan. 15, 1791 - Vienna, Austria

Died: Jan. 21, 1872 - Vienna, Austria

Educated at the University of Vienna, Grillparzer graduated with a degree in law in 1811. After spending some time as a private tutor, he joined the civil service in 1813. Grillparzer was always more interested in literature than in his job, which he only used as a means to an end. From 1807 to 1809 he produced dramatic poetical works and in 1817, his production of The Ancestress made his name. His special interest in Spanish literature shows through in much of his work. A number of his historical tragedies were extremely popular with the public and he was, without a doubt, one of the most popular authors in Austria during his day. His many works include Blanche of Castille (1807-09), Spartacus (1809), Sappho (1818), Der Gastfreund (1821), Die Argonauten (1821), Medea (1821), The Fortune and Fall of King Ottokar (1823), Der Traum, Ein Leben (1834), Libussa (1848), Der Arme Spielmann (1848) and Esther (1861).
