Oswald Spengler

a.k.a. Oswald Arnold Gottfried Spengler

Author Code: GOAS

Born: May 29, 1880 - Blankenburg, Germany

Died: May 8, 1936 - Munich, Germany

Initially educated at the Gymnasium in Halle, Spengler then studied at a number of universities in Munich, Halle and Berlin. He failed his initial doctoral thesis in 1903, but succeeded the following year. From 1906 to 1911 he worked as a teacher in Saarbrucken, Dusseldorf and Hamburg. In 1911, he moved to Munich which became his home for the rest of his life. He wrote the first volume of Decline of the West over the next two years, finally getting it published following the war in 1918. It was an immediate success and propelled Spengler on to the world stage. During the 1920s, he published a second volume of Decline which continued the success of volume one. In 1924, Spengler unsuccessfully backed Seeckt in the election and it proved that Spengler was not practical when it came to politics. Nevertheless, his writing on political subjects remained visionary. After meeting Hitler in 1933, he rejected him as a leader for Germany. He became an avid critic of National Socialism and denounced anti-Semitism as idiotic. Spengler died of a heart attack at his home in Munich. His other works include The Metaphysical Idea of Heraclitus' Philosophy (1904), Prussianism and Socialism (1920), Man and Technics (1932), The Hour of Decision (1933) and Selected Essays (1937 Posthumous).
