Constance Holme

a.k.a. Edith Constance (nee) Holme Punchard

Author Code: EECH

Born: Oct. 7, 1880 - Milnthorpe, Westmorland, England

Died: Jun. 17, 1955 - Arnside, Westmorland, England

From a huge family of fourteen children, Constance was the youngest. She began writing in the early part of the 20th century and most of her fiction was set in her native Westmorland county (Cumbria today). Best known for her 1914 novel, The Lonely Plough, which was very popular at the time, Holme's work continued to hold its popularity during her lifetime, but soon faded after her death. There were some reprints of her work during the 1970s, but interest has remained low. Nevertheless, all of her novels and her short story collection have been printed in the Oxford World's Classics series. Her works include Crump Folk Going Home (1913), The Old Road From Spain (1916), Beautiful End (1918), The Splendid Fairing (1919), The Trumpet in the Dust (1921), The Things Which Belong (1925), He Who Came? (1930), Four One-Act Plays (1932) and The Wisdom of the Simple and Other Stories (1937).
