a.k.a. Edmee Elizabeth Monica (nee) de la Pasture Dashwood

Died: Dec. 2, 1943 - Cullompton, Devon, England

Privately educated, Delafield entered a French religious order in 1911, but left soon after. She worked as a nurse during the First World War and published her first novel, Zella Sees Herself, in 1917. She married Arthur Paul Dashwood, OBE in 1919 and then spent two years in Malaysia before returning to England and settling in Devon. In 1930, she published the first of her most popular works, The Diary of a Provincial Lady, which was hugely successful and was followed by three more in the series. During the early years of the Second World War, Delafield worked for the Ministry of Information. She was very productive and wrote over thirty novels and three plays. Her works include The War-Workers (1918), The Heel of Achilles (1920), The Optimist (1922), Messalina of the Suburbs (1924), The Entertainment (1927), To See Ourselves (1930), The Provincial Lady Goes Further (1932), The Glass Wall (1933), The Provincial Lady in America (1934), The Mulberry Bush (1935), The Provincial Lady in Wartime (1940) and Late and Soon (1943).
