Ronald Firbank

a.k.a. Arthur Annesley Ronald Firbank

Author Code: EARF

Born: Jan. 17, 1886 - London, England

Died: May 21, 1926 - Rome, Italy

Educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, Firbank left school in 1909 without graduating. Having received a large inheritance, he spent years travelling in Europe and the Middle East. His first book containing Odette d'Antrevernes and A Study in Temperament, was published in 1905, before he entered Cambridge. Openly homosexual, Firbank spent the war years in Oxford and produced some of his best work there. Firbank paid for the publication of his works and suffered a lack of public support because of his homosexuality. His only financial success came in 1924 with the publication of Sorrow in Sunlight, which was rechristened Prancing Nigger for the American market. His work always attracted critical acclaim from other authors, such as W. H. Auden and Evelyn Waugh, but he never achieved it from the public. Today, his works are experiencing a revival. They include A Study in Opal (1907), Vainglory (1915), Inclination (1916), Caprice (1917), Valmouth (1919), The Princess Zoubaroff (1920), The Flower Beneath the Foot (1923) and Concerning the Eccentricities of Cardinal Pirelli (1926 Posthumous).
