Joseph Furphy

a.k.a. Tom Collins *

Author Code: OJFF

Born: Sep. 26, 1843 - Yering, Melbourne, Australia

Died: Sep. 13, 1912 - Claremont, Perth, Australia

Initially educated at home, Furphy started his adult life as a farmer, but soon moved on to bullock-driving. He began writing during the 1860s and in 1867, was awarded the Kyneton Literary Society prize for his poem on the death of Abraham Lincoln. The severe drought of 1883, ended his carting days and he started working at his brother's iron foundry. During the Australian depression of the 1890s, he contributed articles to the Bulletin. In 1903, he published Such is Life, elements of which were also published separately either as serials, or as separate works, such as The Buln-Buln and the Brolga (1948). The book is considered a classic of Australian literature and contains excerpts from the diary of the fictitious Tom Collins. His other works, published posthumously, include The Poems of Joseph Furphy (1916) and Rigby's Romance (1921).
