Joyce Cary

a.k.a. Arthur Joyce Lunel Cary

Author Code: EAJC

Born: Dec. 7, 1888 - Londonderry, Northern Ireland

Died: Mar. 29, 1957 - Oxford, England

Educated at Clifton College and Trinity College, Oxford, Cary went to Paris in 1906 in order to study art and then went to Edinburgh to continue his studies. He determined that his abilities would preclude an artistic career and so embarked on a literary one and published some poems. In 1912, he travelled to Montenegro and spent a year as a Red Cross orderly during the Balkan Wars. He then returned to England and later that year joined the Nigerian political service. During the 1915-16 Cameroon Campaign, he served as an officer with a Nigerian regiment. He resigned from service in 1920 due to ill health and returned to England where sold some of his stories to the Saturday Evening Post. However, this lasted for only a short time and he and his family suffered financially for a number of years. Finally, in 1932, he had some success with the publication of his first novel, Aissa Saved. In 1939, he published Mister Johnson, undoubtedly his best-known work and it sold relatively well. In 1941, he won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for the Best Novel with A House of Children. The 1940s proved to be Cary's most successful period, but by early 1952, he was diagnosed with ALS. He continued to write for some time, but eventually the debilitating effects of the disease precluded his ability to do that. His other works include An American Visitor (1933), The African Witch (1936), Castle Corner (1938), Power in Man (1939), Charley Is My Darling (1940), Herself Surprised (1941), To Be a Pilgrim (1942), The Horse's Mouth (1944), The Drunken Sailor (1947), Prisoner of Grace (1952), Except the Lord (1953) and Not Honour More (1955).
