Peter Quennell

Died: Oct. 27, 1993 - London, England

Educated at Berkhamstead Grammar School and Balliol College, Oxford, Quennell worked briefly as a journalist in London after graduating. He published his first volume of poems in 1922, Masques and Poems, and he was held to be a poet of great promise. His poem The Sunflower appeared in many anthologies. In 1930, he taught English at the Tokyo University of Science & Literature, but resigned after a year in order to return to London and writing. He then concentrated his efforts on literary criticism and biographies. From 1944 to 1951, he served as the editor of Cornhill Magazine. He then founded the magazine History Today and was its editor from 1951 to 1979. He received a CBE and was knighted in1992. His other works include Poems (1926), Inscription on a Fountainhead (1929), The Phoenix Kind (1931), Byron (1934), Sympathy (1938), Caroline of England (1940), Byron in Italy (1941), Byron: The Years of Fame (1943), John Ruskin (1949), The Singular Preference (1952), Hogarth's Progress (1955), Alexander Pope (1968), The Marble Foot (1976), The Day Before Yesterday (1978) and The Pursuit of Happiness (1988).
