Frances Cornford

a.k.a. Frances Crofts (nee) Darwin Cornford

Author Code: EFCC

Born: Mar. 30, 1886 - Cambridge, England

Died: Aug. 19, 1960 - Cambridge, England

Granddaughter of Charles Darwin, Cornford received her education privately. In 1910, she published Poems, a collection which contained the 'Fat Lady' verse for which she is best remembered. She married the classical scholar, F. M. Cornford and the couple had five children, one of whom, John Cornford the poet, was killed in the Spanish Civil War. Cornford was a very talented and neglected poet. Both Rupert Brooke and J.C. Squire appealed to Edward Marsh to include her poems in his Georgian anthologies, but to no avail. She was awarded the Queen's Medal for Poetry in 1959. Her other works include Spring Morning (1915), Autumn Midnight (1923), Different Days (1928), Mountains and Molehills (1934) and Travelling Home (1948).
