Joseph Victor von Scheffel

Author Code: GJVS

Born: Feb. 16, 1826 - Karlsruhe, Germany

Died: Apr. 9, 1886 - Karlsruhe, Germany

Scheffel was educated at the Karlsruhe gymnasium and then studied law at the universities of Munich, Berlin and Heidelberg, receiving his doctorate in 1849. In spite of this, Scheffel developed his interest in painting and writing. In 1850, he was appointed 'Amtsrevisor' in Sakkingen on the Rhine and spent two years there before setting off for Italy and his hope of becoming a landscape painter. It was soon obvious that his talent was not in painting, but in telling tales. He became close friends during this time with Paul Heyse and that seemed to inspire him. He returned to Karlsruhe in 1853 and, giving up law, began to study the Middle Ages at Heidelberg. It was during this time that he wroteEkkehard, which was published in 1857 and represented the apex of his creativity. He then became the librarian of Donaueschingen, a post he held until 1859 when his health began to suffer. It wasn't until the publication of Frau Aventiure aus Heinrich von Ofterdingen Zeit in 1863 that he began to recover. He married Karoline von Malzen in 1864, but the marriage ended in separation some few years later. In 1876, on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday, he was raised to the nobility by the Grand Duke of Baden. His other works include Juniperis (1866), Bergpsalmen (1870), Waldeinsamkeit (1880), Hugides (1883), Der Heini von Steier (1883) and Reisebilder (1887 Posthumous).
