Herbert Quick

a.k.a. John Herbert Quick

Author Code: AJHQ

Born: Oct. 23, 1861 - Steamboat Rock, Iowa, USA

Died: May 10, 1925 - Columbia, Missouri, USA

Somewhat crippled from polio as a child, he became well read and began to teach school while he was a teenager. He eventually read law for several years and was admitted to the Iowa bar in 1889. He then practised law in Sioux City, Iowa until 1905, when he published his first novel, Double Trouble, and was convinced that writing was his future. In 1908, he became associate editor of La Follette's Weekly Magazine and in 1909 became editor of Far and Fireside, a post he held until 1916. That year, President Wilson appointed Quick to the Federal Farm Loan Board and he worked in that capacity until 1919. He then produced a series of moderately successful novels depicting rural life in Iowa. Although he had purchased a farm in West Virginia, Quick died of a heart attack while lecturing at the University of Missouri. His works include Broken Lance (1907), Aladdin & Co., a Romance of Yankee Magic (1907), Yellowstone Nights (1911), War, the Farm and the Farmer (1918), Vandemark's Folly (1922), The Hawkeye (1923), The Invisible Woman (1924), There Came Two Women (1924) and One Man's Life (1925).
