Willy Ley

a.k.a. Willy Otto Oskar Ley

Author Code: GWOL

Born: Oct. 2, 1906 - Berlin, Germany

Died: Jun. 24, 1969 - Jackson Heights, New York, USA

Educated at the University of Berlin, Ley became interested in the possibility of space flight after reading Oberth's book on the subject. In 1926, he published Travel in Outer Space and joined the German Spaceflight Society the following year. He was a prolific writer and began contributing to the Society's journal and was an important influence on the German rocket fad that occurred during the late 1920s. After the rise of the Nazis, Ley was convinced that he had no choice but to leave Germany. In 1935, he fled to England and from there left for the United States. He continued his enormous output there, writing both science and science-fiction and contributing to journals in both areas. In 1944, he published Rockets - the Future of Travel Beyond the Stratosphere, describing, with a great deal of accuracy, the future of rocket technology. The book became a bible for rocket enthusiasts. Ley became an American citizen in 1944. He collaborated with many during his career, most notably Wernher von Braun. Unfortunately, Ley died from a heart attack just one month before the 1969 moon landing. His other works include The Days of Creation; a Biography of our Planet (1941), Engineer's Dreams (1954), Salamanders and Other Wonders (1955), Space Pilots (1957), Ranger to the Moon (1958), Beyond the Solar System (1964), Inside the Orbit of the Earth (1968) and Visitors From Afar: the Comets (1969).
