Samuel Rogers

Author Code: ESRG

Born: Jul. 30, 1763 - Newington Green, London, England

Died: Dec. 18, 1855 - London, England

From a wealthy family, Rogers entered a career in banking. He became interested in literature and began contributing verse to Gentleman's Magazine. In 1792, he published Pleasures of Memory, which became very popular and helped Rogers to attain a high position among men of letters of the time. He inherited a considerable fortune n his father's death in 1793, which gave him the financial independence to devote his time to literary pursuits. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1796. He established a circle of friends that included important artists and authors and in 1803 purchased a house in St. James's Place which, for the next fifty years, became a centre of literary culture. In 1810, he published a fragmentary epic, The Voyage of Columbus and followed in 1814 with Jacqueline. Over the years, he helped many artists by providing financial aid or by fighting their cause with publishers and authorities. In 1850, he was offered the position of Poet Laureate, but declined due to his age. His other works include An Epistle to a Friend (1798), Poems (1816), Human Life: A Poem (1819), Italy: A Poem (1823), Poems (1834) and Recollections of the Table-Talk of Samuel Rogers (1856 Posthumous).
