James Huneker

a.k.a. James Gibbons Huneker

Author Code: AJGH

Born: Jan. 31, 1857 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Died: Feb. 9, 1921 - New York City, New York, USA

Initially educated in law, Huneker's true interest was music and the arts. In 1878, he went to Paris and studied piano under Leopold Doutreleau and was greatly affected by the romanticism of the writers and painters there, including Hugo, Flaubert, Turgenev, Manet and Degas. In 1886, he moved to New York City and continued his musical studies, however it was obvious that his talent was more as a critic and writer than a musician. In 190, he published Chopin: The Man and His Music which received critical acclaim and is still a much used reference today. He became the music critic of the New York Sun in 1900 and, in 1906, its art critic. He wrote for the Sun until 1917 and his criticism was highly respected. Huneker was also a prolific contributor to magazines such as Scribner's, North American Review, Harper's Bazaar and others. His writing style was greatly admired and his circle of friends included Theodore Dreiser and H. L. Mencken. His works include Mezzotints in Modern Music (1899), Melomaniacs (1902), Overtones (1904), Iconoclasts (1905), Egoists, A Book of Supermen (1909), Promenades of an Impressionist (1910), Ivory Apes and Peacocks (1915), New Cosmopolis (1915), Unicorns (1917), Steeplejack (1920), Painted Veils (1920) and Variations (1921).
