Ada Leverson

a.k.a. Ada Esther Beddington

Author Code: EALV

Born: Oct. 10, 1862 - London, England

Died: Aug. 30, 1933 - London, England

Ada received a solid foundation in languages, having been taught French, German, Latin and Greek at home. From a large family of nine children, two of her siblings married influential men and, in 1881, Ada herself married Ernest Leverson, a diamond broker. They had two children, but the marriage was far from a success because of her husband's gambling. They were separated in 1905, when her husband moved to Canada. Ada became close friends with Max Beerbohm and the novelist George Moore, both of whom encouraged her writing. Her first novel, The Twelfth Hour, was published in 1907 and won critical acclaim. She then produced a trilogy, The Little Ottleys, which introduced Edith and Bruce Ottley and their comical existence. The series was extremely successful. She became a life-long friend and supporter of Oscar Wilde, who dubbed her the Sphinx and who greatly appreciated her fantastic wit. Ada was a regular contributor to Punch, The Yellow Book and Black and White, but is best remembered for her witty novels which had a resurgence in popularity during the 1960's. Her works include Love's Shadow (1908), The Limit (1911), Tenterhooks (1912), Bird of Paradise (1914), Love at Second Sight (1916) and Letters to the Sphinx From Oscar Wilde and Reminiscences of the Author (1930).
