Arthur Koestler

Author Code: OAKL

Born: Sep. 5, 1905 - Budapest, Hungary

Died: Mar. 1, 1983 - London, England

Educated at the Vienna Polytechnic University, Koestler was forced to leave due to financial difficulties. In 1926, he went to Palestine for a year, but after landing a job as Middle East correspondent for the Ullstein-Verlag newspaper group, he remained in Palestine until 1929. That year he was transferred to Paris. In 1931, he returned to Berlin to be the science editor of Vossische Zeitung and, soon after, was appointed foreign editor and assistant editor-in-chief of the Berliner Zeitung am Mittag. During the Spanish Civil War, he was imprisoned by Franco. He served in the French Foreign Legion in order to escape from the Nazi invasion and then deserted and fled to England. Temporarily imprisoned by the authorities for not having a valid entry permit, Koestler then served with the Pioneer Corps during 1941. He moved to the Ministry of Information in 1942 and wrote scripts for propaganda films and broadcasts. In 1944, he travelled to Palestine again and spent a year there before returning to England. After the war he lectured in the United States and on his return, covered the war in Palestine. In 1949 he became a British citizen. Although once having been a member of the Communist Party, Koestler organised anti-Soviet meetings and protests during the Hungarian Uprising of 1956. In 1960, he was elected to a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Literature. In 1968, he received the Sonning Prize and in 1972 was awarded a CBE. Suffering from Parkinson's disease from 1976, he was subsequently diagnosed with a form of leukemia. Koestler and his third wife Cynthia committed suicide in 1983. Koestler's works include Spanish Testament (1938), The Gladiators (1939), Darkness at Noon (1940), Scum of the Earth (1941), Thieves in the Night (1946), The Age of Longing (1951), Arrow in the Blue (1952), Reflections on a Hanging (1956), The Sleepwalkers (1959), The Art of Creation (1964) and The Call Girls (1972).
