Konrad Bercovici

Author Code: OKBV

Born: Jun. 22, 1882 - Braila, Romania

Died: Dec. 27, 1961 - New York City, New York, USA

Following the death of his father from injuries sustained during anti-semitic riots in Romania, Bercovici's family moved to Paris. There, Bercovici was educated in music at the Universitie Populaire. He married the sculptor, Naomi Librescu and the couple emigrated to Canada in 1916, later settling in New York City. He published his first book, Crimes of Charity, in 1917 after having worked for a New York charity. From 1917 to 1920 he worked as a journalist for the New York World and from 1920 to 1921 for the New York Evening Post. By the early 1920's, Bercovici had become a full-time writer. His close ties to the Gypsies of Romania inspired much of his best work, such as Ghitza and Other Romances of Gypsy Blood (1921). He was a regular contributor to many journals such as Harper's and produced a variety of works including biographies and travel. He also worked in Hollywood as a screenwriter for many years. He was a good friend of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Douglas Fairbanks, Paul Robeson and Ernest Hemingway, to name a few. His many works include Gypsy Blood (1922), Around the World in New York (1924), The Volga Boatman (1926), Peasants (1928), Blood and Lava (1930), Against the Sky (1932), his autobiography, It's the Gypsy In Me (1941), The Exodus (1947) and Savage Prodigal (1948).
