Edwin L. Arnold

a.k.a. Edwin Lester Linden Arnold

Author Code: EELA

Born: 1857 - Swanscombe, Kent, England

Died: Mar. 1, 1935 - London, England

The son of Sir Edwin Arnold, he was educated in India where he spent most of his early years. Returning to England, Arnold eventually became a journalist in 1883. In 1887, he published Bird Life of India. He published his first novel, The Wonderful Adventures of Phra the Phoenician, in 1890, which was serialized in the London Illustrated News and which subsequently appeared in book form. Arnold was never truly successful as an author, although his work in science fiction is said to have influenced other writers. His Gulliver of Mars (1905), subsequently inspired Edgar Rice Burroughs in his Mars series. Arnold's other works include A Summer Holiday in Scandinavia (1877), The Wonderful Adventures of Phra the Phoenician (1890), Rutherford the Twice-Born (1892), The Story of Ulla and Other Tales (1895) and Lepidus the Centurion: A Roman of Today (1901).
