Scott Nearing

Author Code: ASCN

Born: Aug. 6, 1883 - Morris Run, Pennsylvania, USA

Died: Aug. 24, 1983 - Harborside, Maine, USA

Educated at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Temple University and the Wharton School of Business, Nearing received his BSc in 1905 and went on to receive his PhD in Economics in 1909. He taught economics at Wharton and Swarthmore College, however, his social activism and radical views on economics resulted in his effective dismissal from Wharton and generated a controversy that made Nearing an idol of the socialist cause. From 1915 to 1917, he taught at Toledo University, but his anti-war views resulted in his release. He moved to New York City and was a founding member of the People's Council of America for Democracy and Peace, later becoming its chairman. He joined the Socialist Party and lectured at the Rand School of Social Science, a Party institution. A paper he produced at the Rand (The Great Madness: A Victory for the American Plutocracy) resulted in charges being brought under the Espionage Act. Nearing was found not guilty at the subsequent trial, but the American Socialist Society was fined. When the Socialist Party split and part formed the WPA (Worker's Party of America) in the early 1920's, Nearing eventually joined them in 1927 and worked on The Daily Worker from 1928 to 1930. During the 1930's and 1940's, Nearing lived in Vermont and occasionally lectured. When World War II began, he was again opposed to America's participation. When the A-bomb was dropped on Japan, he renounced the government. He and his wife Helen became homesteaders and in 1954 he published Living the Good Life: How to Live Simply and Sanely in a Troubled World. The couple toured the world during 1956 and 1957 visiting China and the USSR in addition to Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Nearing became something of a cult hero during the Vietnam War, both for his pacifist ideals as well as his homesteading skills. Nearing committed suicide by fasting for a month and a half when he had reached 100 years. He was a prolific writer contributing to major periodicals in addition to his many books which include Social Religion (1910), The Super Race (1912), Women in American Industry (1915), The Menace of Militarism (1917), The New Slavery (1920), Irrepressible America (1922), Bolshevism and the West (1924), Where is Civilization Going? (1927), Must We Starve? (1932), The Rise and Decline of Christian Civilization (1940), The Tragedy of Empire (1945), Man's Search for the Good Life (1954), The Conscience of a Radical (1965) and Civilization and Beyond: Learning From History (1975).
