John Gould Fletcher

Author Code: AJGF

Born: Jan. 3, 1886 - Little Rock, Arkansas, USA

Died: May 10, 1950 - Little Rock, Arkansas, USA

Educated at Phillips Academy in Andover and Harvard University, Fletcher left school before graduating due to the death of his father. It was during his years at Harvard that he began to write poetry. In 1908, he left for Italy and over the next twenty years would spend much of his time in England. There he became acquainted with, and an adherent of, Imagism. He had little success in attracting publishers to his work, so, in 1913, he paid for the publication of five volumes of verse himself. The work received a great deal of negative criticism and later Fletcher would criticize the work himself. Later that same year he met Ezra Pound, who convinced Fletcher to finance Pound's magazine, The Egoist. Pound in turn introduced Fletcher to Amy Lowell, one of the leaders of the Imagist movement. Fletcher returned to America in 1914 at the outbreak of the First World War. In 1916, he finally broke off relationships with Lowell, after she undermined one of his projects. For the next ten years, Fletcher's work lost its popularity. In the late 1920's and early 1930's his work once again received critical acclaim, but in 1932 he suffered a nervous breakdown that hospitalized him for five months. At the start of 1933, he returned to Little Rock where he received an honorary degree from the University of Arkansas and was welcomed as the State's favourite son. In 1935, he founded the Arkansas Folk Lore Society and the following year divorced his wife. He then married Charlis May Hogue Simon, an author of children's books. In 1937, he published his autobiography, Life is My Song, which was well-received. In 1938, his Selected Poems, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Suffering from depression, Fletcher took his own life, drowning in a pool near his home. His other works include The Book of Nature (1913), Fool's Gold (1913), Irradiations (1913), Sand and Spray (1915), Japanese Prints (1918), Paul Gauguin: His Life and Art (1921), Parables (1925), The Black Rock (1928), South Star (1941), The Burning Mountain (1946) and Arkansas (1947).
