Llewelyn Powys

Author Code: ELLP

Born: Aug. 13, 1884 - Dorchester, Dorset, England

Died: Dec. 2, 1939 - Clavadel, Davos, Switzerland

Educated at Sherborne School and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, Powys was one of eleven children, many of whom were talented in their own right. His brothers include the authors John Cowper Powys, T.F. Powys and A.R. Powys, and his sister Philippa was a well-known poet. After graduating, Powys spent several years travelling and lecturing in the United States, Switzerland and Africa. He contracted tuberculosis in America, a disease he would live with for thirty years until it eventually claimed his life. From 1914 to 1919, he helped his brother William on his farm in Kenya. He returned to America in 1920 to work as a journalist and while there met the novelist Alysa Gregory. The two were married in 1924 and the following year returned to England where they settled in Dorset. Unlike his brothers, Llewelyn concentrated on non-fiction and produced only one novel, Apple Be Ripe, in 1930. Powys and his wife travelled in Europe, visited Palestine, the West Indies and, when his health began to deteriorate, Switzerland. Powys entered a clinic in Davos where he eventually died. In addition to his output of articles and essays, his works include a collaborative work with his brother John Cowper called Confessions of Two Brothers (1916), Ebony and Ivory (1923), Thirteen Worthies (1923), Black Laughter (1924), Henry Hudson (1927), Impassioned Clay (1931), Glory of Life (1934), Dorset Essays 1935), Rats in the Sacristy (1937) and Love and Death (1939 Posthumous).
