Alice Dunbar Nelson

a.k.a. Alice Ruth (nee) Moore Dunbar Nelson

Author Code: AADN

Born: Jul. 19, 1875 - New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

Died: Sep. 18, 1935 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Alice was educated at Straight University (now Dillard) and graduated in 1892, an almost unique event at the time for an African-American woman. She spent a few years teaching in New Orleans before publishing Violets and Other Tales in 1895, her first book of stories and poems. She then moved to New York and helped to found the White Rose Mission in Brooklyn, a home for girls. She married the poet Paul Dunbar in 1898 and the couple moved to Washington D.C., but the marriage was not a success and ended in separation in 1902. She then moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where she taught at Howard High School. In 1910, she married Henry A. Callis, a professor at Howard University, but again the marriage was unsuccessful and ended in divorce. In 1913, she became the co-editor of the A.M.E. Review (African Methodist Episcopal), a church publication. It was through the AME that she met and married the civil rights activist, Robert J. Nelson in 1916, a marriage that lasted for the rest of their lives. In 1918, Alice became the field representative for the Women's Committee of the Council of Defense. She devoted most of her time after 1920 to journalism and the furtherance of civil and women's rights. In 1932, the Nelsons moved to Philadelphia, and there Alice's health began to deteriorate and she died from heart failure in 1935. In addition to her journalistic output, her works include The Goodness of St. Rocque and Other Stories (1899), Masterpieces of Negro Eloquence (1914), Mine Eyes Have Seen (1918), Snow in October (1927) and Sonnet (1927).
