Harry Houdini *

Houdini, the son of a Hungarian immigrant rabbi, began his career as a trapeze artist and by the early 1900's had moved on to escapism. During the early part of the 20th century, Houdini was a top performer and extremely successful. In the 1920's, he began a campaign against the mind readers, mediums, etc and published Miracle Mongers and Their Methods in 1920, exposing their tricks and ruses. In 1924, he published another such work entitled, A Magician Among the Spirits. He also published The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin in 1908, the French conjuror from whom Houdini took his stage name.
