C. J. Dennis

a.k.a. Clarence Michael James Stanislaus Dennis

Author Code: OCJD

Born: Sep. 7, 1876 - Auburn, South Australia

Died: Jun. 22, 1938 - Melbourne, Australia

Educated at Christian Brothers College in Adelaide, Dennis worked briefly as a solicitor's clerk before joining the Adelaide Critic as a journalist. Apart from a short stint at the mines at Broken Hill, Dennis stayed with the Critic and became its editor. In 1906, he founded the Gadfly, a satirical journal that was short-lived. And so, he reverted to freelance journalism until 1908 when he went to Toolangi to concentrate on his writing. Finally, in 1913, he published his first book of verse, Blackblock Ballads and Other Verses, which did not meet with much success. In 1915, he published The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke, which was a huge success and sold over 60,000 copies in the first year-and-a-half. He had many successes during the war years and was extremely popular with Australian troops. In 1922, he became the staff poet with the Melbourne Herald, a post he held until his death. Following his death, he was acclaimed Australia's national poet, but his star dimmed in the ensuing years. His other works include The Moods of Ginger Mick (1916), The Glugs of Gosh (1917), Doreen (1917), Digger Smith (1918), Blackblock Ballads and Later Verses (1918), A Book for Kids (1921), Rose of Spadgus (1924) and The Singing Garden (1935).
