Christian Winther

a.k.a. Rasmus Villads Christian Ferdinand Winther

Author Code: NCFW

Born: Jul. 29,1796 - Fensmark, Naestved, Denmark

Died: Dec. 30, 1876 - Paris, France

Educated in theology at the University of Copenhagen, Winther graduated in 1824, but rather than enter a religious career, he chose to become a poet. He had already begun to publish poetry while in school, but it wasn't until 1828 that his first book of verse appeared. After inheriting from his uncle, Winther spent a year in Italy. In 1835, he published his second book of poems. King Christian VIII was impressed by Winther's poetry and appointed him to tutor his daughter-in-law, Princess Mariane, in the Danish language. Over the years, Winther produced a further eight volumes of poetry and also some short stories. In 1851 he was awarded a state pension and from that time until his death, he lived in Paris. His main work is undoubtedly The Stag's Flight an epic poem, which was and is extremely popular in Scandinavia. His other works include Some Poems (1835), Flight to America (1835), Four Stories (1843) and New Poems (1853).
