Ida Husted Harper

a.k.a. Ida (nee) Husted Harper

Author Code: AIHH

Born: Feb. 18, 1851 - Fairfield, Indiana, USA

Died: Mar. 14, 1931 - Washington D.C., USA

Educated in Indiana, Ida began teaching school in 1870 and became the principal of a Peru, Indiana high school in 1871. That same year, she married Thomas Harper, and attorney and friend of Eugene Debs. Ida began contributing articles under a pseudonym to a Terre Haute newspaper, and later wrote for a magazine edited by Debs. In 1887 she helped to organize an Indiana woman suffrage society and became its secretary. In 1896 she joined, and began working as a reporter for, the National American Woman Suffrage Association. She worked together with Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Matilda Gage in editing and producing the multi-volume The History of Woman Suffrage. She became close with Anthony and later became her official biographer, publishing The Life and Work of Susan B. Anthony (1898-1908) in three volumes. She was a tireless advocate of woman's rights and wrote many articles on the subject of suffrage for leading periodicals, such as The North American Review. In 1922, she finished the fifth and sixth volumes of the History of Woman Suffrage. Her other works include The Associated Work of the Women of Indiana (1893), Suffrage - a Right (1906), Woman Suffrage Throughout the World (1907), How Six States Won Woman Suffrage (1912), Suffrage Snapshots (1915), A National Amendment for Woman Suffrage (1915) and Story of the National Amendment for Woman Suffrage (1919).
