Rudolf Steiner

a.k.a. Rudolf Joseph Lorenz Steiner

Author Code: GRJS

Born: Feb. 27, 1861 - Donji Kraljevec, Croatia

Died: Mar. 30, 1925 - Dornach, Switzerland

Educated at the Vienna Institute of Technology, Steiner studied there from 1879 to 1883 when he left to begin working as a science editor. He returned to school later and earned a PhD from the University of Rostock in 1891. He worked at the Goethe archives until 1896. He then moved to Naumburg and worked for the Nietzsche archives. In 1897, he moved to Berlin and joined the literary journal Magazin fur Literatur as chief editor and part owner, although he left after a number of his editorials and contributions caused dissatisfaction among subscribers. In 1899, he began an association with Theosophy with the publication of Goethe's Secret Revelation which attracted the attention of the Society. By 1904, Steiner was the leader of the Theosophical Esoteric Society for Germany and Austria and that year published Theosophy:An Introduction to the Spiritual Processes in Human Life and in the Cosmos. He became a widely traveled lecturer and continued to expand his knowledge in other areas, eventually constructing a 'science of the spirit' which he named Anthroposophy. In 1919, he lectured at the Waldorf-Astoria cigarette factory in Stuttgart and his lectures helped to establish the Waldorf school. The school expanded over time throughout Europe and now number more than a thousand. Near the end of his life, Steiner lectured on ecology and is responsible for initiating the field of biodynamics. His many works include Truth and Knowledge (1892), Christianity as Mystical Fact (1902), Cosmic Memory: Prehistory of Earth and Man (1904), The Education of the Child (1907), An Outline of Esoteric Science (1910), Four Mystery Dramas (1913), The Renewal of the Social Organism (1919) and Fundamentals of Therapy: An Extension of the Art of Healing Through Spirit and Knowledge (1925).
