Edward Hamilton Aitken

Born: Aug. 16, 1851 - Satara, India

Died: Apr. 11, 1909 - Edinburgh, Scotland

The son of a missionary, Aitken's primary education was provided by his father. He then attended university in both Pune and Bombay, receiving his Master's degree from the latter. In 1870 he began teaching Latin at Deccan College in Pune. In 1876, he entered civil service working for the Customs and Salt Department in Bombay. In 1889 he published Behind the Bungalow, a series of essays of life in India. In 1903, he became the Chief Collector of Customs and Salt Revenue in Karachi followed in 1905 by appointment as Superintendent in charge of the District Gazeteer of Sind. He retired in 1906 and moved to Edinburgh where the change of climate for the worse obviously had an impact on his health and he died in 1909 after a short illness. Aitken developed a strong interest in nature and founded the Bombay Natural History Society in 1883. He published many papers in the Society's Journal over the years in addition to his books which include The Naturalist on the Prowl (1894), The Five Windows of the Soul (1898), The Common Birds of Bombay (1900), The Tribes on My Frontier (1904) and Gazeteer of the Province of Sindh (1907).
