Felix Frankfurter

Author Code: AFFR

Born: Nov. 15, 1882 - Vienna, Austria

Died: Feb. 22, 1965 - Washington D.C., USA

Frankfurter came to New York from Austria with his family when he was twelve. Educated at City College of New York, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1902. He then studied law at Harvard Law School and edited the Harvard Law Review. In 1906, he joined Hornblower, Byrne, Miller & Potter and worked as an assistant to the U.S. Attorney Henry Stimson. When Taft appointed Stimson Secretary of War, he brought Frankfurter along as law officer for the Bureau of Insular Affairs. He then returned to Harvard and taught administrative law until 1917 and America's entry to the First World War. He then served as a special assistant to Secretary of War Baker. He held other posts during the war, including Judge Advocate General in the War Department. Together with Louis Brandeis, Frankfurter lobbied President Wilson to support the British Balfour Declaration which established the Jewish state in Palestine. He helped found the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) in 1920. He returned to Harvard in 1921 with a chair at the Law School. Always controversial and radical, Frankfurter supported a new trial for Sacco and Vanzetti and published The Case of Sacco and Vanzetti: A Critical Analysis for Lawyers and Laymen, which won him few friends at Harvard. When Roosevelt became President in 1932, Frankfurter became one of his trusted advisors. He was appointed Supreme Court Justice by Roosevelt following the death of Benjamin Cardozo in 1938. He continued to serve on the Court until his retirement in 1962 following a stroke. Frankfurter was an advocate of judicial restraint in all matters and became leader of the conservative faction of the Court. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Kennedy in 1962. His other works include The Business of the Supreme Court (1927), Justice Holmes and the Supreme Court (1938) and Felix Frankfurter Reminisces (1960).
